How to choose hunting binoculars (part two)

We are exploring the world of hunting binoculars and in the June news we understood the concepts of lens magnification/diameter and lens treatment.

Now, let’s take it a step further to gain some more specific knowledge and be able to have the conversation with an experienced shopkeeper who uses the terms correctly.

Let’s start with focusing, since on the market we will find binoculars with adjustable focus, which we recommend for hunting, and those with fixed focus. Generally, most binoculars have adjustable focus, that is, by rotating the central ring the image is brought into focus.

When we notice that the focus ring is not there, it is because the binoculars provide clear images from 20 meters to infinity, as for our Sporty line which, however, is designed to follow sports competitions and which is suitable for use by part of more people, because the lack of a moving part makes the structure less delicate.

Now let’s talk about the field of vision, because if we have already said that at a greater magnification the lower the field of vision will be, we have not specified that there are Wide Angle models, recognizable by the initials W.A. next to the size of the binoculars.

If the lenses are wide-angle, the field of view will be greater than non-wide-angle models with the same specifications. In the Konus line, most of the models carry this abbreviation in order to offer a wide range.

If instead we are talking about “eye relief”, then it is a value that expresses the maximum distance from the eye of the person who is using it, while maintaining the field of view unchanged.

Instruments with a high value of eye relief (called long eye relief) offer a much more comfortable vision, especially for those who wear glasses, as we find in the Konusrex and Emperor series.

Another useful information concerns prisms because there are different types and the main ones are the Bak-7, composed of borosilicate glass and the Bak-4, composed of barium glass.

Bak-4 prisms are of superior quality and guarantee definition and brilliance.

Konus binoculars with Bak-4 prisms are many and therefore allow you to choose the most suitable model, with the guarantee of superior vision quality.

So what can be our advice for hunting binoculars could be summed up in choosing a model with 8-12 magnification, 42/50/52 mm objective, BAK-4 prisms, fully multicoated and possibly Wide Angle.

In the Konus line, based on spending capacity, you can explore the Konusrex lines for those who want the best, Emperor for those looking for quality but want to contain spending and Konusarmy for those looking for the best quality/price ratio.

In conclusion, we report the authoritative opinion of Luke Hartle, editor in chief of Gun Digest, or the magazine that Americans consult before buying anything to do with weapons: “Hours and hours spent scrutinizing a binoculars up to those crucial seconds in which I aim at the target, just before shooting: an exceptional sharpness is what I ask of a scope.

This is why I choose Konus, which is second to none in terms of image quality “.
