Tactics at the next level

At a zoom moltiplication factor of 8 times this tactical-sporting variable from Konus adds lockable tall turrets with 1/10 mil clicks, adjustable parallax, two color  illuminated modified mil dot reticle and good optical quality.

With this Absolute 5-40×56, Konus offers a high-performance tactical-sports tool: not only and not so much for the high magnification range, equal to 8 times between minimum and maximum, but above all for the use of high quality lenses, Ed qualified (i.e. with very low dispersion), equipped with fully multi coated treatment to guarantee maximum light transmission and the absence of chromatic aberrations. External surfaces of objective and eyepiece lens, furthermore, are equipped with a treatment aimed at facilitating the flow of water. With these specifications, you actually have a very versatile and powerful instrument for long distance sports shooting, characterized however at the same time by a quality/price ratio which is still what made Konus famous around the world: a simply unbeatable relationship.

The spotting scope has a 30mm supporting tube, an overall length of about 400 mm and it boasts good versatility when it comes to mounting on rifles with short actions, long and magnum, thanks to an available space for the front ring of 80 mm. The space for the rear ring is approximately 55 mm.

The objective features a front lens deeply recessed from the edge (18 mm), the latter is threaded and the standard equipment also includes a removable 100 mm lens hood tube of 100 mm, which can be installed at will. The objective bell has a rather gentle and progressive taper, towards the supporting tube. The zoom ring, in light alloy, is characterized by a series of longitudinal groves that allow a good grip, however there is also a highly tapered trapezoidal section relief, with apical threaded hole for the application of an optional handcuff (also supplied) 20 mm high, with which it is possible to overcome the resitance of the maneuver even in the most difficult conditions.

The turrets for adjusting the point of impact are high, without protective caps, with a diameter of the knurled apex equal to 32 mm. They are normally blocked, to be able to rotate them you need to lift them by about 1 millimetre. By unscrewing the three dowels at 120 degrees on the head, it is possible to restore the zero after calibration with your weapon. The sensitivity for each click is 1/10 of Mrad, that corresponds, in a nutshell, to 1 centimetre per 100 meters.

On the left side a third turret is planned, which integrates two distinct functions: the first is parallax correction, with ring that provides references from 10 yards up to infinity; above it there is a ring for adjusting the illumination of the central crosshair of the reticle (modified mil dot type), with five levels for each of the two lighting colors (red and blue) and two off positions, one for each color. On the top of the turret is the screw-on battery cover, which is a classic Cr2032.

We mounted the scope on a Unique Alpine Jpr1 Nordland rifle in .308 Winchester caliber, with integral Picatinny rail and Grs Berserk rifle stock. The reticle constitutes a conceptual extension of the mil dot, in fact it carries a sequence of solid dots on each arm of the central cross, empty notches and dots, which can allow the projectile to fall at different distances, as well as compensation for crosswind deviation and telemetry. However the reticle is positioned on the second focal plane (does not vary in size as the magnification varies), the notches would correspond to a precise mil value only at a specific zoom value, which however is not explicitly indicated on the ring. The company we contacted, confirmed to us that the magnification at which the reticle has “true” milliradian spacing is 9x.

The turret clicks are precise and well spaced, at the same time, however, rotation is easy and does not present that “stickiness” that can sometimes be experienced with spotting scopes. The fire test took place both at 100 and 300 meters and, then bringing the calibration back to 100, we found a perfect response of the clicks to the adjustments given. The parallax ring has numerous intermediate distance references, particularly (as is natural) in the range between 10 and 100 yards, then to 150,200, 300, 450, 900 and really 1.800 yard, before the “infinity” symbol. The clarity of vision was confirmed with indoor use at the Gun bank range in Lograto (Bs), in whose dim light we had no difficulty not only in framing the targets (which are obviously enlightened) but also the details of the dark backdrop with the ball-stop barriers.

It is an ideal tool for those who intend to approach long-distance shooting, in fact it allows you to have a high magnifying power, good click precision, more than valid optical qualities, with considerable convenience.

Konus Absolute 5-40×56 riflescope is at the top of optical quality and performance, but with a price that is still extremely attractive. We put it to the test with a Unique Alpine Jpr1 Nordland in .308 Winchester rifle.

1

The ring for adjusting the zoom also has a removable oversized handle to further facilitate the maneuver.

2

The turrets, tall and uncovered, have a sensitivity of 1/10 of a milliradian, corresponding to 10 mm at 100 meters per click. On the left, parallax adjustment and reticle illuminator, with 5 levels and two colors.

3

The indication “Ed” in the model name refers to the use of low dispersion lenses, which are able to guarantee maximum light transmission and absence of chromatic aberrations.

A 100 mm sunshade to be mounted on the objective is included. Also included are transparent lens caps, cleaning cloth and key for removing the battery compartment cover.
